Are Gut Feelings Really in the Gut? Understanding Your Gut Feelings and What They Are Telling You

Welcome,

This morning, I read a blog in which the question posed was "Are Gut Feelings Really in the Gut?". This was not the first time I have seen this question come up because the source of gut feelings is a bit confusing to people. Once we become aware of our gut feelings and begin to exercise our use of this powerful intelligence, our energy seems to release from the hara upward and in communication with the rest of our body and thinking brain. The feeling from our gut then releases energy in other parts of our body as the heart and it is difficult to tell where the energy and feeling, the intuition that arises, comes from. We can, of course, become more aware of our gut feelings and trace our insights and intuitive thinking to the original gut response in the hara or belly area. As a person begins to focus on gut feelings of emptiness and fullness (once again, not to be mistaken with a need for food intake, but often confused and the cause of over eating), it becomes clearer and clearer that the gut feelings are our own response to the impact of life upon us and are connected to all of Nature.

The chart below is an attempt to help give a picture of this process of gut reflection on feelings and what your feelings are telling you about your life. It is rather an over simplification of our gut feeling experience, but much more is available in our book "What's Behind Your Belly Button?" There are, of course, other scenarios beyond the three we have diagrammed, but these are the three we have seen most often in counseling. The forth that is unfortunately experienced by most of us at one most difficult time or another in our lives, but not included here, is a feeling of nearly 100% both the lack of acceptance and lack of control in our lives. I suppose in that case, the teeter-totter would be pictured upside down.

This chart is available also on our website as a free black and white downloadable PDF for educational purposes.

The chart above is taken from material in our latest book Increasing Intuitional Intelligence and is also discussed in What's Behind Your belly Button?

Increase your Intuition By Learning the Difference Between Emotional Feelings and Gut Feelings

There are a multitude of bloggers out there writing little articles everyday on gut feelings, gut instincts and intuition. I have been out there searching for them and joining in on the discussions where I can. I am finding that people are beginning to recognize that they truly do have gut instincts and that they mostly like it, but also they know they do not understand them. And perhaps one thing I am most pleased about is that people are recognizing that gut instincts are important in their lives—that they are important to at least listen to—although recognizing and expressing some concern that they do not fully understand them.
Dr. Daniel Goleman was the first to popularize the understanding in psychology that our feelings and thinking are different and that it is important to learn the difference, to increase emotional intelligence, which he linked to success and healthy living. Up until Goleman's work, we had the theories of Type of Dr. Carl Jung that pointed to the difference in Thinking (logic) and Feeling (value) as functions, and, working off that, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Although quite valuable, Jung's theories did not make a clear distinction showing that feelings are in the body and logic in the head brain. After a number of years of an active humanistic movement, people slowly began learning in the 70s and 80s the difference in their body and head responses, feeling and thinking. But now, it seems we may be finally understanding that we need to go a little further with our Emotional Intelligence and learn the difference in the emotions and in the gut feelings. When I speak of our gut feelings, I am talking about the emptiness/fullness feeling in the gut that is related to our inner needs for and to a balance of being in control of our responses to life—freedom—and for the need for acceptance, rather than the emptiness that is due to the lack of food intake we often mistake it for and thus find ourselves over-eating. Until we reflect upon our gut feelings of emptiness and fullness and reassess our past through somatic reflection, our intuition will be clouded with old inaccurate patterns of memories in our thinking and our intuition just will be unclear as well.
Gut feelings have no thinking component like emotions do, gut feelings are pure feeling of emptiness or fullness and the source of all feeling in emotions. Emotions are generally felt above the gut, above the hara, and are a combination of feeling from the gut and thinking from the head, i.e. fear, emptiness in feeling combined with a projection from the head as to a specified threat. Gut feelings are pure feeling and relate to the state of the human organism (it is your truth, so to speak, related to your needs for acceptance and control). It can take quite a bit of reflection on our gut feelings to begin to understand this, to see this in your own experience, particularly if one is not use to exploring feelings and distinguishing the difference in emotions and gut feelings. But just like it is so important to understand the difference in thinking and feeling to increase our intelligence, it is important to take the time to understand the difference in emotional feelings and gut feelings to further increase our intelligence and facility that we may like to call "Intuition". So, we may have increased our "Emotional Intelligence" by understanding the difference in our thinking and feelings or emotions, but let's go further and increase our "Intuitive Intelligence" by understanding and reflecting upon the difference in our emotional feelings and gut feelings.
Simply said, we need to explore our gut instincts, not just use them with some vague idea of what they are. One really has to "Know Thyself" and take the effort to do that inner work to use their gut feelings successfully in decision-making. There is much more to our gut instincts than just "pattern recognition brain impressions" as some bloggers on other websites have suggested, although these patterns are certainly a result of our gut intelligence combined with our thinking—and rather it is accurate thinking or not depends upon whether we use our gut feelings as a premise of our thinking or leave out the impact of experience upon us and marginalize our human needs as unimportant to consider in problem-solving. This all effects the accuracy and haze in these mental patterns and our ability to have and increase Intuitive Intelligence.
We actually do have gut instincts, gut feelings, a "second brain" (see Gershon's work) that relates and records how well our instinctual human needs are being met (see our book "What's Behind Your Belly Button?", as well as one of our fellow blog member Grant Soosalu's book "mBraining", which I highly recommend). And it takes quite a bit of inner work to truly recognize them, to tell the difference in gut feelings from emotional feelings, and to understand what about you and your environment your gut feelings are expressing, to understand the impact of experience upon you. Bob and I have found as counselors, researchers, and educators over 40 plus years on this subject that people find that their intuition and healthy decision-making increases exponentially with somatic reflection on the awareness of one's gut feelings.  A reflection into one's past to reassess the meaning of our experiences and update our "thinking patterns", conscious and unconscious, is a healing and healthy experience.

We have included in "What's Behind Your Belly Button?" a technique—the Somatic Reflection Process—and discussion on increasing gut feeling awareness (understanding the difference in gut feelings and emotional feelings) and how through gut feeling reflection we "update" these old "patterns" in our thinking brain and increase our Intuition.

New Book Helps You Understand How Your Gut Brain is Rational and How to Use It

"BriefingWire.com, 7/13/2012 - The new book "What’s Behind Your Belly Button? A Psychological Perspective of the Intelligence of Human Nature and Gut Instinct" by Martha Char Love and Robert W. Sterling explains what your gut feelings are actually capable of telling you about your inner instinctive needs, how to listen to the voice of your gut, and how to use both of your brains—head and gut—to work together for your optimal health and well-being. Although numerous books and articles have recently talked about the gut instincts as valuable in giving us useful hunches in the decision-making process, "What’s Behind Your Belly Button?" goes much further and explains how gut feelings not only have a psychological intelligence of their own, but are also understandably rational in their functioning and reflect in their own voice how well the two instinctive human needs of acceptance and of control of one’s own responses in our lives are being met." Feeling Memory — Reflecting on Gut Instincts and Feelings to Improve the Immune System

 Welcome Guest!

My colleague, Robert Sterling, and I have spent the last 40 plus years as counselors studying gut feelings in both ourselves and others and have found that it is wise to always pay attention to our gut feelings. The problem comes for most of us in that we don't always understand what our gut feeling is saying to us. Often, the gut is talking about an impact of an experience from long ago that is being triggered in the present moment and our gut has stored the feeling memory of an unresolved issue. We certainly are better off to explore this memory by way of our gut feelings and bring some new light on the issue from the past that needs to be resolved, then move forward with our lives. If you would like to learn more about the voice of the gut and exactly what our gut instinctual feelings are, please enjoy our new book "What's Behind Your Belly Button?" on Amazon.com and more information on our work at: http://careerstorefront.angelfire.com

Perhaps one of the most important ways that we can boost our immune system is to become aware of our gut feelings and reflect upon them to open the communication between the gut brain and head brain and give us a clear focus on our needs as human beings. Certainly, improving the gut-head connection will reduce stress in the individual and this seems to be the key to optimal health.

For those of you who have read our book "What's Behind Your Belly Button?", you may remember that we found in the hundreds of people that we worked with over a 40+ years period that the need for acceptance (identity as a member of the human family) and the need for control (freedom) of one's own responses to life are the two instinctive needs that are gauged in us by the voice of the gut—the empty-full feelings in our guts that are caused other than by the need of food intake.  We found that people feel empty when one or both of these two instinctual needs are not met and most of us spend our time trying to keep these needs in balance, since they often "seem" conflicting, giving up one need for the other. It is not until we have consciously reflected on our gut feelings and reassessed our past experiences and their impact upon us in light of the awareness of these important needs and feelings, that we can fulfill both our need for acceptance and control and thus feel fullness and vitality in life. The process we developed and used for this conscious reflection and assessment of needs on gut feelings is called The Somatic reflection Process.

We have included in our book both examples of actual counseling sessions using the Somatic Reflection Process and a complete protocol. It is advised to initially do this process with another person (acceptance from another member of the human family for your gut feelings is vital), then you can use this protocol to ask yourself questions about your feelings and do it internally successfully.

A Specific Guide to Use to Listen to Your Gut Instincts—The Somatic Reflection Process

Thank you for coming to our blog. We hope you will read this post and use your gut feelings to give us your response! Now that Dr Michael Gershon, M.D., has proven in the medical lab that our gut, the enteric nervous system, has an intelligence of its own and not dependent on the head brain (although they affect each other), it seems that the exploration of the use of this second brain and the instinctual responses are finally emerging. We see blog articles all over the web now about the importance of using gut instincts. Many people are becoming painfully aware that we as a humanity have gotten far away from the consciousness of our gut instincts and some people are afraid they will one day go away. We can assure you that this will not happen and that our gut instincts are alive and well, just a bit hidden in our unconscious. And they can be accessed and listened to by anyone with feeling reflection work. The question that is rarely explored in a specific way in blogs and books today is how to actually get in touch with these instincts. We have developed a system for doing this work that we call the Somatic Reflection Process and we have furnished a complete protocol and examples for you to study and use in our new book "What's Behind Your Belly Button?", available on Amazon.com.

So, we would like to say a word here about the Somatic Reflection Process to use to learn to listen to the gut instincts: The only way to truly understand what our gut instincts are is to reflect on the feelings in our gut and go back in time with our gut feeling reflection to an early childhood time when life was simple and our feelings were not so buried by our logic. When we do the work of this gut reflection, we find that our gut responses have always been there and hold the memory of the impact of experience upon us. As counselors, Bob and I have gone through this process with hundreds of people and no one, to our knowledge, has ever regretted the experience. Often times, the person was very willing to try this process because they were experiencing a gut knot or profound emptiness. But also, we used this method to deal with all adult problems in the here and now, including  career confusion and decision-making, relationship problems, personal loss, grief, shame, returning vets, trauma, etc. The gut instinctual feelings of emptiness and fullness-often confused with the feeling of empty and full in terms of the need for food—will always be concerned about the needs of the person for the balance of acceptance/connection and for control of one's own responses or the freedom to respond naturally, while the thinking head may be working in behalf of everything and everyone else outside of us. Upon listening to the gut voice again in our lives, the two brains may finally work together, and this serves the individual and the community. Listening to the voice of the gut and working to use our thinking head in consort, brings our body-mind together and opens the way of the heart and the higher intuitive mind.
